El Segundo

History of El Segundo

When I first heard the name, I wondered why a community would boast about being number 2. It’s not exactly a chant that would go over well at a tennis match. I’ve heard that the original name of the community was “El Segundo de Nada” meaning second to none, in Spanish, but the real reason is more prosaic. The city was so-named because it became the home of the second Standard Oil refinery on the West Coast when the oil giant purchased 840 acres to build it in 1911. The refinery is now owned by Chevron.

The seaside community was originally settled by Tongva Native America. Under Spain it was known as Rancho San Pedro. At one point the land was owned by a Scottish baronet named Sir Robert Burnett. The city was incorporated in 1917.

Description of El Segundo

El Segudo is just south of Los Angeles International airport. From sea it’s immediately recognizable by the constant offloading oil tankers. It’s considered one of the most business friendly communities in LA County.

It’s an aeronautical center with offices of Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and the Los Angeles Air Force Base including the Space and Missile Systems Center. It’s also home of the US Headquarters for several foreign airlines including Japan Airlines and Air China.

Near the Chevron oil refinery is the Hyperion sewage treatment plant which handles a large percentage of LA’s waste.

El Segundo is five and half square miles and pays city employees very well. The police patrol a quiet safe community.
